Teens and Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) Essay

Introduction For many years, underage drinking in America has been a very controversial topic. However, because of the many discrepancies that some US state representatives have added to the federal underage law, this subject will hardly be solved or going away, anytime soon. Proponents argue â€Å"The current underage drinking law of 21, has not stopped teen drinking, and has instead pushed underage binge drinking into private and less controlled environments, leading to more health and life-endangering behavior by teens† (ProCon, 2012, para. 2). Therefore, the minimum legal drinking age for teens should be lowered from 21, to 18. On the other hand, â€Å"Opponents of lowering the MLDA argue that teens have not yet reached an age where†¦show more content†¦The strongest reasons in favor of Proponents: If teens are responsible enough to serve in the military, then why are they not responsible enough to drink alcohol? Opponents contend that: (1) Lowering the MLDA will see an increase in injuries and death resulting from car crashes; (2) Long-term alcohol abuse causes serious health problems in teens when compared to teens that do not drink alcohol; and, (3) Teens that drink alcohol are involved in a higher rate of assaults than teens that do not drink alcohol. Opponents also argue that teens who abuse alcohol: (4) Are more apt to commit suicide, than teens who do not abuse alcohol; (5) Are involved in a significant amount of non-vehicular homicides, than teens that do not drink alcohol; (6) Have a higher chance of bei ng sexually and physically abused by friends and strangers than non-drinking teens. Strongest argument in favor of Opposition is that, â€Å"traffic fatalities decreased when the MLDA increased† (ProCon, 2012). I maintain for this argument that: Although MLDA does not effectively prevent teens from drinking alcohol or from drinking in inappropriate locations, it does however set the legal standard that allows for accountability for the risky and dangerous behaviors that are often associated with underage drinking. Data encryption alone may not be sufficient. So the DES key size will be extended. Three different keys will be used for this purpose. It does it by three times applying succession algorithm. AES is a kind of WI-MAX networks. AES stands for Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm. While encryption and decryption process, data and key length may vary based on many factors and AES supports all of them. RSA is kind of WI-MAX networks. RSA stands for Rivest-Shamir-Adleman is a well-known public key encryption of blocks of data key exchange encrptosystems. It has two private keys i.e., public and private keys. Key Length 3x56 = 168 is the combined key size. K1, K2, K3 are used while TDEA is in EDE (Encrypt-Decrypt-Encrypt) mode. The plain text is encrypt K1 and decrypt with K2 and encrypt with K3.It is mutually independent keys with space 356 = 168 bits and also have two mutually independent keys, the third key same as the first key. While retrieving the original plain text, 128 bit keys will take 10 rounds, 192 bit keys takes 12 rounds and 256 bit keys takes 14 rounds in AES based system. RSA has 1 round for large random prime numbers. Speed Encryption level and average time is increased by 3-times iteration. This causes enough slowness when compared with other cipher methods. The stories of the two poems are very contrasting, they oppose one another quite obviously. One about the horrors of war, one about how much ‘fun’ it is. Both poems serve a purpose and perform to it very well, using all kinds of techniques to encourage or discourage young men to join the army. The storyline of ‘Who’s for the game’ is telling of how great the war is and how you simply can’t miss out. This is meant to attract young soilders to join the army and fight in the first world war. She makes the war seem like a big fun game by using lines like â€Å"Who’s for the game, the biggest thats played, the red crashing game of a fight?† This entices the young men as they think that the war will be fun and a laugh but also honourable and noble to take part in. It makes it seem like a sort of game and men are persuaded to join in. In contrast ‘Dulce et decorum est’ has a very different theme and story. The poem tells of an experience of a soldier during an attack in World War One. The mood of the poem is sadness. Sadness could be too weak a word to describe the poem but is still the main emotion that comes to heart. The horrors of WW1 and trench warfare are involved in â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est†. The fact that Owen experienced the war himself really makes you think how horribly the war was. The story is also supposed to make everyone realise the loss and pain that the war creates and to discourage men to recrute as it would be a waste of life. It is very effective because if someone read the words â€Å"all went lame, all blind.† they would not want that to happen to them and would probably less inclined to join the war. In Dulce when Owen talks about how if ‘you’ could see what he had seen then you wouldnt tell the old lie: â€Å"Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori†(it is sweet and honourable to die for your country) he adresses the reader asâ€Å"My Friend..† he does this to make the reader feel personally responsible for the deaths of so many men. This makes you feel guilty and more sad about the topic of the poem. Although this is very effective for the purpose of the poem, he is actually adressing his old ‘friend’ Jessie Pope who obviously wrote ‘Who’s for the Game’ aiming to attract young men in and of course was very successful. Owen believed that she was solely to blame for the death of the soldiers. He thought that she had no right to tell of this great fun game when she had never experienced the horrible conditions of the war and would never have to, so shouldnt be encouraging people to go when she would never be able to go herself. The language in who’s for the game is very different to in Dulce. Pope writes in a conversational manner which makes the poem more memorable and persuasive. She compares the war to a ‘game’, implying that there is little danger on the battlefield and nearly no chance of dying. She also refers to the war as a sport where a player would return with a minor injury such as a crutch. She persuades the men to join the army by making them feel ashamed and cowardly if they weren’t going to fight for their country. She also has a friendly manner in her poem as she refers to the men as ‘lads’. On the other hand Dulce uses very formal yet morbid language for his poem to create a serious mood. He uses lots of ‘ugly’ language to put the reader off and make them horrified and disgusted but also sad. An example of ugly language is when he is describing the man dying in his dreams: â€Å"he plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.† That sequence of those three words; guttering, choking, drowning sounds a lot like coughing something up. It sounds as if Owen is the man choking to death in the gas, practically coughing up his own lungs. Or as if the memory that Owen experiences if hard to say, that he chokes it up because of the sadness of it. This creates very strong imagry for the viewer to think about. It makes the poem seem more alive and realistic and easier to imagine. The rhythm of popes poem is very jaunty and lively, creating the mood of a game. It could convey the soldiers marching, or popes idea of a fun and enjoyable war. She uses this upbeat rhythm to abide with the them of the poem and it works very well. It makes the reading of it sound more happy and alive. Dulce’s rhythm also ties in with its theme. It is quite stodgy and sort of plodding, which mimics the way the soldiers are walking after being on the front line. It means that the poem has more depth than just the words that he is saying. It is also about how you read it and making the rhythm slow moving makes you read it in more of a serious tone. Both poems use lots of different poetic devices to create vivid imagry. Dulce uses a lot more similies compared to Who’s for the Game. It does this because the poem is more specific and supposed to be realistic and truthful. One very effective device is when Owen says â€Å"his hanging face, like a devils sick of sin.† He is describing what the dead soldier looked like after the gas attack. He uses the similie of it being worse than a devils face. The devil is the worst thing a lot of people can think of and especially back then would have been a horrifying thought and for it to be ‘sick’ of sin would be even worse. He is suggesting that his face looked like the worst thing imaginable and no one should ever have to see that. However although Whos for the Game does not use many similies it does use a lot of metaphors to create a lovely image of this great fun war. It means that she is not exactly telling the truth or she is just creating a better version of her perception of the war. All in all I think that both poems stick to their purpose very well and are both effective in persuasion. They both use plenty of poetic devices to serve a purpose and create a certain mood or atmosphere. Although having completely different themes they are very similar in how they convey their personal reality of war. My focus group will be highschool and college students with an emphasis on those who are in the junior class of both institutions. I intially planned on studying only highschool students but in my collection of information I found that diversity issues are rising in numbers at institutes of higher education on a profoundly widespread basis. I intially planned on studying only highschool students but in my collection of information I found that diversity issues are rising in numbers at institutes of higher education on a profoundly widespread basis. Some issues that I will explore will be: 1. What role has racism as well as sexism and classism played in the American educational system? 2. Are educators receiving more education concerning diversity issues now than in the last 10 years and if so why? 3. Is this training consistent and widespread? 4. How does diversity affect the students learning abiltity from both the student and teachers perspective? 5. Is it possible that a teacher who has nothing in common with their students to effectively teach and nurture the student? 6. What can be done to bridge the gap between students and teachers. After exploring the above-mentioned items in great depth, I will then look at ways to either improve or implement the way that diversity issues are currently being handled. I have chosen this topic because as a person enrolled in an institute of higher learning and the mother of children who are currently enrolled in a public school system I am concerned that for to long we have turned a deaf ear as well as a blind eye to issues that could potentially affect us as a society in the long run. Introduction Racism, which is defined by the Webster School Dictionary as â€Å"A claim unfounded in scientific fact, that any race is superior to another†(p 586). For many years, people have tried to understand what is at the heart of racism. To understand racism entirely would be an educational experience in itself. Racism has been engrained into our social fabric for a ... ...nd of time, but educators as well as others in society have a duty to ensure that no one person feels less because they are different. It should not be a choice for school districts but it should be a requirement for both educators and their students from kindergarten until they are seniors in highschool. I admonish all school systems as well as individual educators to not take the attitude that you can not affect change alone because you can. In Support of Capital Punishment I believe that capital punishment is a justifiable means of punishment for the most heinous crimes. In addition, the means of execution should not matter if the basic principle behind this form of justice can be justified by the specific crime. This is why my opinion is that any form of capital punishment in effect in the United States today is warranted and fair. Recent executions have drawn a great deal of publicity to the subject of whether death by electrocution is "cruel and unusual". Cases such as that of Pedro Medina, whose mask caught on fire during the procedure, and Jesse Tafero, whose head caught on fire, provide examples of punishments gone wrong, and therefore punishments possibly being cruel and unusual. At this moment, all executions in Florida are on hold as the Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether or not the electric chair is cruel and unusual. However, there are just a few examples of botched cases, concentrated in Florida. Other evidence provided by those opposing the use of electrocution as a form of the death penalty is the fact that the 2,000 volts of electricity cause every muscle in the body to contract, something that should be very painful. However, even withstanding this argument, I believe that capital punishment in any form allowed by the U.S. Constitution at this moment is justified. I believe that if every person is given one life, another person does not have the right to take an extra one. A murderer has forfeited the quota and his life is not his responsibility or fate any longer. The punishment is then decided by the society the murderer is a part of. The United States has adopted execution as a legal means of punishment and I agree with the method and the principle behind it. I believe that if lethal injections or electrocutions or any other forms of capital punishment were televised, or at least made more public, it would serve as a real deterrent. In other countries where severe punishment is more public, the rate of crime is tremendously lower. Although I understand that many atrocious crimes are committed in moments of passion or inebriation or chemical highs, many are committed as calculated events.
