Margit Stangeââ¬â¢s Literary Criticism of Chopinââ¬â¢s The Awakening Essay
Margit Stangeââ¬â¢s Literary Criticism of Chopinââ¬â¢s The Awakening Kate Chopin created Edna Pontellier, but neither the character nor her creator was divorced from the world in which Chopin lived. As a means to understand the choices Chopin gave Edna, Margit Stange evaluates The Awakening in the context of the feminist ideology of the late nineteenth century. Specifically, she argues that Edna is seeking what Chopinââ¬â¢s contemporaries denoted self-ownership, a notion that pivoted on sexual choice and ââ¬Å"voluntary motherhoodâ⬠(276). Stange makes a series of meaningful connections between Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s dramatization of Edna Pontellierââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"awakeningâ⬠and the historical context of feminist thought that Stange believes influenced the novel. For example, she equates Ednaââ¬â¢s quest for financial independence with the late nineteenth centuryââ¬â¢s Married Womenââ¬â¢s Property Acts, which sought to give married women greater control over their property and earnings. Ultimately, Stange believes, Ednaââ¬â¢s awakening, her acquisition of self-determination, comes from identifying and re-distributing what she owns, which Stange argues is her body, much as contemporary feminist thinkers discussed what she calls womenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"sexual exchange valueâ⬠(281). Additional references to reformers such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, as well as the legal standards of femme seule and femme couverte buttress Stangeââ¬â¢s position that Ednaââ¬â¢s experiences are a reflection of historical reality, even if some of the equations are a bit rough. Chopin, Stange notes, is careful to separate Edna the wife from Edna the woman ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Mrs. Pontellierâ⬠becomes ââ¬Å"Ednaâ⬠in the text, and then ââ¬Å"Mrs. Pontellierâ⬠once more when her sense of self-ownership again seems lost. Chopin... ...alls a ââ¬Å"moment of extreme maternal giving,â⬠Stanton argued for womenââ¬â¢s right to a public voice because ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëalone [woman] goes to the gates of death to give life to every man that is born into the world; no one can share her fears, no one can mitigate her pangs; and if her sorrow is greater than she can bear, alone she passes beyond the gates into the vast unknownââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (289). Chopin may have had a clearer grasp of the immense hold of the rhetoric of motherhood than Stange acknowledges. Edna at ââ¬Å"the gates of deathâ⬠may be a woman caught in an evolving conception of self-ownership, burdened by the sorrow of realizing that she can only really own what she no longer wants, because what she does want is yet beyond her grasp. Ednaââ¬â¢s trap is indeed a historical reflection, a comment on the tumultuous, even violent, evolution of ideologies, expectations, choices, and realities.

But seriously, even if they tried to soften the blow, I felt they still poked at my weakest spot. So finally, I decided to do some change. I told myself when I looked into the mirror that I can no longer live like this. So, I secretly began a program for myself to slim down. It was probably the first semester of my junior high school when the semester began, that I launched my personal project. I decided to keep it to myself as I started my plan with the most simple and effective way which was dieting. I donââ¬â¢t know how I made up my mind but I was able to skip my breakfast and lunch everyday in the next year. However, the only thing I regret about skipping meals was disappoi nting my mother who lovingly prepared them for me. Every morning she woke up very early to prepare breakfast for me and my dad and carefully packed them into a meal box for us to take out. But when I opened the box smell the food, I either threw it directly to the trash or give it to my friend to eat. There were actually several times when I felt I wanted to quit, and that I cannot do it anymore. But every day when I looked into the mirror at my reflection and stepped on the weighing scale, I get motivated with the changes I see. This kept me on track. To continue being a Division II member, it is important that the individual fulfils a three-year membership system which is again divided into two phases. The first phase is the candidacy period while the second is the provisional period. The member must therefore complete the two years of the candidacy period, and one year for the provisional period. The school has a large sway in determining whether one will be a Division II or not, since it is schools which apply for inclusion into a given division, based on the ascertainment that the school has met the threshold required. The same case applies to Division III membership (NCAA, 2012). Division I offers a given number of financial aids as awards, to student-athletes, without exceeding the maximum amount that is allowed. Division I sports issue grants-in-aid as a grant program to help the students settle their fees, buy academic literature and settle personal needs.
